Feels Like Home Again

@ Rocket Park, Mount Albert

@ the harbor downtown
Since the arrival of my husband and kids last January, things took a 360 degree turn as I'm now back to my old self again. I've got the kids to keep me busy and since they arrived, we've been into parks, fairs and then eventually, got my son into Kindie. Like what Alan said, it's all coming together. There were so many unknowns for us since last year but now things are all falling into place.

  1. Hi Ms. Kquill, we have been following your blog since my partner and I decided to apply for sfv a few months now. We're from the Philippines and we found your blog after non stop googling for any successful Filipino applicants. Your story is very inspiring and we are happy that your family is now with you in New Zealand.

Will it be okay to ask for tips on how you were able secure a slot? In terms of the internet connection and other things to prepare.. We've been reading a lot of posts from forums and found that it really is a stiff competition. We filled up the application forms beforehand but a week before the visa selection, we found that it was no longer available. Is it the same last year that the applicants can only access the forms on the day of the selection?

We would greatly appreciate your response.

    Thank you and God Bless!

    1. Hi Rochelle,

Yup, the form was only made available on the day itself. You need to be pretty quick in typing. Be ready by midnight NZ time kasi in 5 to 10 mins, ubos agad ang slot. Apart from that it's really all up to chance. Once you get selected, you get a confirmation email with a checklist. I noticed that immigration rules change every couple of months so it might be worth keeping a tab on time as it might impact your qualifications. Upon arrival, time clicks so fast that before you know it, it's almost 9 mos! Silver Fern is really a job search visa and I think it's best for skilled workers who has at least 5 years experience in that profession. I never bothered to look at seek.co.nz when I should have while still in Pinas. It gives you an idea on the job market and will help you customize your CV to suit the qualifications. CVs go through a scanning software (like SnapHire) which pre-filters CVs so you need to have the right keywords in place. I also recommend that only one of you would go here. Pag nakahanap na ng work yung isa, tsaka na lang sumunod si partner para less gastos unless finance is not a concern. It's also ideal to land on a skilled job so you can apply for residency. I applied for residency last December and this week, AIP na kami. Pwede naman sabay na application ang SFV and Skilled Migrant category so backup mo yung isa. I've met a lot of SFv folks last year and we all struggled to get the job. Basta buo ang loob mo, just stay focused and accept all the challenges that lies ahead. Getting selected in SFV will be your first step, landing the rigt job within 9 mos would be the next. All the best to you.

    2. Hi Ms. Kquill! Thanks so much for your advice! Kailangan namin ng maraming energy to stay awake on that day. And ng mabilis na internet connection. We are praying na makasama kami sa slot this year. We are thinking din po if kailangan na isa sa amin ang mauna. Ang pinakaimportant po ay makapasok kami sa quota. Maraming salamat po! God Bless to you and your family!

    1. Yes, I'm Thomasian. Typical challenge in job search.. "do you have NZ work experience?" ayan, siempre wala kasi migrant nga. The best way to find work is through networking. You need to tap people that you know, at kung wala kang kilala, magpakilala ka, kausapin mo katabi mo sa bus, sa train, makipag chikahan ka sa mga tao sa simbahan, introduce yourself sa Filipino community at sa mga NZ recruiters. Do cold calling. 90% of jobs are not advertised. And most of the companies here are small to medium enterprises. So it's who you know talga. But yup, that's the struggle that migrants are faced with. Nakatsamba lang ako.

By the way, NZ Immigration at Buendia processed the docs.
